I guess that majority of people can relate to this situation:
Dishes are piling up. No one is taking responsibility, yet everyone claiming to do their fair share. One or two people end up cleaning dishes for these one or two people who do not. No one knows exactly who these people are. The tension is rising in the house.
The situation can be indeed troubling and it is always bad to point fingers, as the reality might not be as it looks like on the surface. Still there can be a resolution where everyone wins.
Nothing motives quite as well as money. We need to monetize the process.
To do so, follow simple 3-step process to your cleaning dishes monetization:
Step 1 – Put a money cup next to the sink.
Step 2- Establish some ground rules in the house.
Rules 1 – Every time you want to leave a dirty dish in a sink you have to also put money into the money cup. See the following example:
0,1 cents for a fork, spoon or a knife
0,2 cents for a plate
0,5 cents for a pot
Rule 2 – If you are caught putting a dirty dish without putting money into a cup, you need to pay 2 euro (or dollar) in a cup.
Rule 3 – A person who does all the dishes can take all the money from the money cup (and only if he/she does all the dishes).
Step 3 – Enjoy your clean sink
Why does this work?
As you can already see that whenever there are a few dishes in the sink, no problem. Monetary reward to do dishes is low.
If however dishes start to accumulate monetary reward to clean dishes become more relevant and someone eventually will get this reward.
The people who always clean everything will start earning extra money for their good habits. The people who are always leaving dishes will start losing money and eventually start doing their own dishes.
This system can be further replicated in all household activities.
