Is Pokémon Go For You?

I picked up Pokémon Go because my flatmate did. We were both invited to a party of YouTube’s and the main topic of conversation was of course this app, so I needed to catch up.

I was interested what makes Pokémon Go into a new social trend. I gave it a serious consideration and came up with 5 pros and 5 cons for why people should (not) use this app:

IMG-20160728-WA0008Pro #1 – Meeting people – During one of my Pokémon Go walks a player used a Lure Module on a checkpoint, which essentially means that it become very attractive for players to spend 30m on that checkpoint. During these 30m many players approached that specific checkpoint and also spend 30m there. It was a great opportunity to talk about Pokémon Go.

Con #1 – Addiction – Even after short period of time using this app it becomes clear to me that some people are spending way to much time playing it, almost to the point of addictive obsession. As with any other addictions Pokémon Go can negatively affect other parts of people’s life.

Pro #2 – Exercise – There is an ongoing joke that Pokémon Go is a great way to lose weight. In my experience this observation is correct. I walked, cycled and jogged many extra kilometers, which I would not otherwise do thanks to Pokémon Go.

Con #2 – Using productively time – Living in an over stimulated world of a million distractions, where we often have more free time than we care do admit, we are looking for creative ways to waste this time with things such as to watch TV, play video game and socialize with friends. Pokémon Go is another distraction in a long series of distraction, which really shows how childish and irrational we can be from time to time.

Pro #3 – Dating and Socializing – On second day of using the app I went for on a Pokémon Run – combination of running and using the app. On one checkpoint a bike stopped near me. On it was a cute girl with a phone in her hand. I though it was a coincidence, so I asked whether she was playing Pokémon. She was! We made an appointment to go on Pokémon Date. Maybe we get married.

Con #3 – Dangers of Using – While going from home to work or any other location it is very attractive to use the app. In Amsterdam we get to places mostly by bike. I therefore did make kilometers with phone in my hand, swiping Pokémon app away. Although I am an experienced cyclist, I realized that playing Pokémon Go can be dangerous activity for me and to people surrounding me, with media reporting many (funny) accidents, where a guy for example felt from a cliff while Pokémon hunting.

864x486Pro #4 – Community – As described in the beginning of the article, Pokémon Go is responsible for many parties, get together, friendships and so on. Indeed if you know what to look for you can notice a rather huge community of Pokémon Go players surround you.

Con #4 – I Don’t Care About Pokémon – Personally I never cared about Pokémon brand. I’m not interested which Pokémon are better and I don’t want to learn all different Pokémon names. I just like the concept, which gives me an extra reason to walk and to socialize.

Pro #5 – Great new concept – As a first of it genera Pokémon Go will have many knock offs with different concepts where I am sure there will be apps for everyone, so while Pokémon Go may not be for you, it may be interesting to keep your eyes open for many new apps that will be coming up soon!

Con #5 – New conceptual flows – With new concepts there are many mistakes and underdeveloped functions that app has, such high energy consumption of the app, app crushing consistently and functions like “Transfer” having to be done one by one, which when you have to transfer 20x Pokémon may become very annoying and time consuming (1 click function can be developed).

PS: Professor is a Hoarder. What does Professor Willow do with all donated Pokémon? He gets a lot of Pokémon from players from all around the world and gives 1 sugar for each donation, but as any good business man he has to have a return on investment, otherwise he will be broke in no time. Dungeon, slavery, Hannibal Lecter and Frankenstein are only few things that go through my mind. I therefore think that Professor Willow is the only winner in Pokémon Go a secret Pokémon mafia boss that only pretends to be good to Pokémon.
