A friend of mine got very upset with me after seeing me washing dishes using a sponge. He claimed that a sponge was one of the unhealthiest things people keep in their houses.
He elaborated by saying that sponges are (often):
- Not washed properly;
- Used for too long;
- Used for all sorts of cleaning (food and surface);
and most importantly,
- Constantly wet sponged develop many harmful bacteria!
He elaborated by saying that sponges are often used for too long, they aren’t washed properly between the washes, and they are often used to clean other things besides dishes. We then use these dirty sponges to clean what suppose to be clean dishes and eat out of them, which is, of course, very unhealthy.
But, I could not only rely on friends for correct information, so I did some research. I found that he was indeed right and that a sponge is one of DIRTIEST OBJECTS in the house. Some people even consider it to be dirtier than a flushed toilet.
There are several alternatives to sponges. For example, there are Scrub Brushes or Steel Wools. Both works like sponges but they don’t keep the water on them after the wash, and they are much easier to wash as well. Still, the best alternative to sponge is a sponge. We just need to replace it on a regular basis, every week if necessary, which is quite easy to do since sponges are quite cheap and widely available on the market.
My friend added that it is a wildly concerning fact, because a lot of people are not aware of this danger. Still, now that you are informed it is your turn to inform the others.
